Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore VeniceThe Island on which todays basilica sits was donated by the Doge Tribuno Memmo to Benedictine Monks circa 982AD who reclaimed the marshes to build a monastery. The Church, dedicated to St George, was built later and replaced cicra 1565 with the Church designed by Palladio as you see it today and the campanile was added at the end of the Eighteenth Century. The Island provides a stunning vista across the lagoon and is an irresistable subject for artists interested in architecural Venice. It forms just one of Tim Dolby's body of highly detailed and fine watercolour paintings from this most beautiful of historic locations.
